PASTORAL REFLECTIONS

Dear Good Shepherd Folk:

Church signs like this are making the rounds: “There are some questions that can’t be answered by Google.” So, are you wondering how to cut an onion without crying? Arrange marching band music? Audition for SURVIVOR? Bathe a guinea pig, cook couscous?  You can web surf until your eyes grow sore. Nothing is out of our reach now in information technology! There’s also eHow.com for those who want to learn how to do anything―brought to you by experts on everything from relationships to getting rich. The eHow database has 70,000 articles and is visited by more than eight million people each month. When inquiring minds want to know, eHow delivers!

But if you type in “How to have hope” you get some ideas about how to have inner peace or how to carry on when a loved one dies―all important, of course, but the advice gets thin and pretty individualized. A tougher one is “How to suffer faithfully”―mmm, not much there―except an article about how to treat a pinched nerve.

Database is one thing―a deeper awareness of God and the world goes far beyond electronic how-to’s. As the church sign suggests, “there are some questions that can’t be answered by Google”…. or eHow.com. Sooner or later I have to leave my computer screen to discover there is a life to be lived… a faith to be grasped… a hope to be pursued… and a love to be experienced.

I came upon theologian Reinhold Niebuhr’s powerful observation in a book: “Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime; therefore we are saved by hope. Nothing true or beautiful or good makes sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we are saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore, we are saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own; therefore, we are saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.”

It took awhile for this to sink in. I read it ‘umpteen’ times, until it spoke volumes about seeing life in the greater context of God’s Big Picture. Really! It humbles me to know that I am here taking up space, my life on loan and gifted by God to share for a short time. Right now what I need more than anything is forgiving love so I can make the most of life …faithfully, hopefully…lovingly…while I have time. I couldn’t find any advice on Google or eHow to see this any clearer than from within my own heart of meditation. Now, how to cook couscous―that’s something else!

EDUCATION NEWS

Vacation Bible School

Rainforest Adventure is the theme of this year¹s Vacation Bible School, to be held June 22 -26 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  Children Ages 3 through Grade 6 are invited to swing right into Rainforest Adventure for a tree top Bible blast!

Lisa Caro, our coordinator for this year’s Vacation Bible School, is looking for volunteers to teach, help with crafts, refreshments, and registration. VBS is always a blast, and this year is no exception! It is common knowledge that the teachers and helpers have as much fun as the kids at Vacation Bible School, so come along and enjoy!  To volunteer, contact Lisa or sign up on the Education bulletin board

Tooting Our Own Horn

All of us at one time or another have heard this phrase, or maybe you have
even used it yourself. It is usually uttered when we want to tell someone
about something we have accomplished but don¹t want to sound like we are
bragging!

The people who work with Education Ministry at Good Shepherd do a great job
but don¹t “toot their own horns.” So, as the Education Ministry Team Leader,
I would like give a well-deserved “toot of the horn” to a number of folks.

A “toot of the horn” to the Education Ministry team who meets the first
Sunday of every month to prepare Splash! Newsletters for mailing and to

discuss and make decisions related to Education matters at Good Shepherd.
Members of the team are Lisa Caro, Chris Caro, Marilyn Ayers, Marj Koch and
Sandra Hagen.

A second “toot of the horn” to our staff of Sunday School Teachers who
devote hours to preparing and teaching classes: Michele Hildebrand, Anne
Harter, Lisa Long, Jim Latham, Marilyn Ayres, Laurie Wilhelm, Nancy
Tregoning, Evie Timberlake, Phyllis Hane, Karen Stegman, Sarah Irani, Pastor
Ron
and Pastor Gary.

A third “toot of the horn” to Lisa Caro, this year’s Vacation Bible School
coordinator, and all those who will be volunteering to help this summer. Also
to Jan Lounsbury, our coordinator for the last five years and to previous VBS
volunteers.

And a fourth “toot of the horn” to the Library Team who work diligently to
categorize and catalog books, paste in pockets, put cards into pockets and
attach labels so that all might enjoy books from our library.  This team
includes Terri Baker, Catherine Didas, Carolyn Fishack, Marilyn Ayres,
Julie Howell, Beth Burdette
and Becca Reeves.

Thanks to all of you for a superb job!

―Lucretia Reaves

SUMMER WORSHIP AND EDUCATION SCHEDULE

Worship and Music Ministry Team, Congregation Council and the Church Staff recommend that Good Shepherd return  to a “Summer Schedule” for worship and education, something the congregation used to do in years past. With many  people away and schedules more relaxed, we will begin a 10-week schedule on Sunday, June 15th that includes  the following:

8:30AM  -   Traditional Evangelical Lutheran Worship
9:30AM  -   Summer Sunday School for Children; Fellowship Hour for Youth and Adults (Community Room and Outside)
10:30AM-   Sing and Rejoice Contemporary Service

This summer schedule is separate from the work that the SWEAT (Sunday Worship and Education Alternative Times)

Task Force is currently working on. The congregation will be polled about some options for a permanent worship  and education schedule within the next month.

                                       Preschool News

Happy spring to you!  We hope that you have had a chance to explore the preschool halls and

classrooms to see the many ways spring has arrived.

Be sure to visit the Children’s Garden down at the preschool entrance and see our flowers in full bloom.

This is a very busy time of the year for us.  The three-year olds have planned a trip to

the South Mountain Creamery and the Catoctin Zoo, and the four-year olds will be going

to the Baltimore Zoo.  Later this spring the threes will enjoy a Teddy Bear Picnic with their class,

and the fours will be making friendship T-shirts to remember all of the new friends they have made

at Good Shepherd.  The fours will also be preparing a special Mother’s Day tea to honor and celebrate

 their mothers.

We will have our cash and carry flower sale on May 5 and 6.  There will be a nice

variety of flowers, vegetables, and beautiful hanging baskets.  Please feel free

to stop by between 8:55 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  Hopefully Mother Nature will allow us to be outside on those days.

Graduation time is fast approaching.  We will be saying a sad farewell to our little

ones on May 22 and 23 with a program of songs performed by the children and a short reception afterward.

Happy Spring to all!  Thanks be to God!
